Fritz Thaulow

Frits Thaulow painted rivers and water better than almost anyone of his time. His streams flow through snow and villages, with reflections of mills, houses and trees shimmering on the surface.

Born in Christiania (now Oslo), he studied in Copenhagen and in Karlsruhe under Hans Gude. He spent time in Paris, where he met the Impressionists, and later lived in France, painting rivers, mills and villages in Normandy and elsewhere. He was brother-in-law of Paul Gauguin through their wives. He died in Volendam in the Netherlands. The National Museum in Oslo, the Hermitage and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston hold his work.

A Factory Building near an Icy River in Winter shows his feeling for cold light and moving water.
