American Impressionism

Sunlit gardens, New England coasts and city streets painted with an American eye.

American painters met Impressionism in France and brought it home. Theodore Robinson worked at Giverny near Claude Monet in the late 1880s. Mary Cassatt lived in Paris and showed with the Impressionists. William Merritt Chase painted the sunny dunes of Shinnecock on Long Island in the 1890s.

Childe Hassam painted New York streets and later a series of flag-hung avenues, including “Allies Day, May 1917”. Hassam, John Twachtman and others first exhibited together as the Ten American Painters in 1898. Simple light frames keep them fresh.
