About Famous Seascape Paintings
Caspar David Friedrich painted "The Monk by the Sea" between 1808 and 1810: a tiny figure faces a vast dark sea and sky, and the picture now hangs in Berlin. Ivan Aivazovsky, who painted thousands of marine scenes, made "The Ninth Wave" in 1850, with survivors clinging to a mast as a huge wave rises in golden light.
Gustave Courbet painted many versions of "The Wave" on the Normandy coast, building the water with thick paint and a palette knife. In America Winslow Homer spent his later years on the Maine coast, and "The Gulf Stream" (1899, Metropolitan Museum of Art) shows a lone sailor on a broken boat surrounded by sharks. In Japan Hokusai's "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" became one of the most copied images in the world.
