About Famous Horse Paintings
Horses were a subject of status and movement long before photography. In 1762 George Stubbs painted "Whistlejacket", a life-size Thoroughbred stallion set against a plain background, now in the National Gallery in London. Théodore Géricault showed galloping horses at full stretch in "The Derby at Epsom" (1821), a painting that hangs in the Louvre.
In the 19th century Rosa Bonheur won wide fame with "The Horse Fair", a large and busy scene of Percherons being shown in Paris, now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Edgar Degas returned to the racecourse again and again, as in "Racehorses in Front of the Grandstands", with jockeys in bright silks. In 1911 Franz Marc painted "The Large Blue Horses", using colour to express feeling rather than to describe.
