About Famous Dog Paintings
Dogs often stand for loyalty in older art. In Jan van Eyck's "Arnolfini Portrait" (1434, National Gallery, London) a small terrier stands at the couple's feet. Francisco Goya painted "The Dog" on the wall of his house near Madrid between about 1819 and 1823: a lone head looks up from a vast empty space, and the work now hangs in the Prado.
In Victorian Britain Sir Edwin Landseer became the best known animal painter of his day. "Dignity and Impudence" (1839, Tate) pairs a calm bloodhound with a cheeky terrier, while "The Old Shepherd's Chief Mourner" shows a sheepdog resting its head on its master's coffin. In America Cassius Marcellus Coolidge painted his famous dogs at the card table, including "A Friend in Need" (1903).
