About Famous Cat Paintings

Painters have long used cats to add life and a hint of mischief to a scene. In Goya's portrait of the young "Manuel Osorio Manrique de Zúñiga" at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, three cats stare at the boy's pet magpie. Édouard Manet placed a black cat at the foot of the bed in "Olympia" (1863), one of the most debated paintings of its time.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir painted "Julie Manet with Cat" in 1887, showing Berthe Morisot's daughter holding a cat on her lap. In 1912 Franz Marc painted "Two Cats, Blue and Yellow", where curled bodies become rhythms of bold colour. Paul Klee's "Cat and Bird" (1928, Museum of Modern Art) fills the canvas with a cat's face and a small bird on its forehead.
