About Famous Flower Paintings
Flower painting grew into a specialist art in the Netherlands around 1600. Ambrosius Bosschaert's "Vase of Flowers in a Window" at the Mauritshuis gathers tulips, roses and irises that could never bloom at the same time. Rachel Ruysch carried the tradition into the 18th century with lush, carefully balanced bouquets that made her one of the best paid painters of her day.
Two centuries later Vincent van Gogh painted "Irises" (1889, Getty Museum) in the garden of the asylum at Saint-Rémy, and "Almond Blossom" (1890) to celebrate the birth of his nephew. Claude Monet spent his last decades painting the "Water Lilies" in his pond at Giverny, where flowers and reflections merge into fields of colour.
