Hand-painted reproductions, straight answers

The questions people ask before buying a painting, answered in a line or two.

Are hand-painted oil painting reproductions worth it?

Yes, if you want a real painting rather than a poster.

Each one is painted by hand in oil on cotton canvas, so it has brushstrokes, texture and depth a print cannot copy. Ours start at $249 with free shipping, and you have 90 days to return it.

What is the difference between a hand-painted reproduction and a print?

A print is made by a machine in minutes. A hand-painted reproduction is painted in oil by an artist, stroke by stroke.

Up close you see raised paint and brush marks. No two hand-painted copies are exactly alike.

Can you paint any painting?

Any public domain painting, and photos you took or have permission to use.

We cannot paint works still under copyright, which covers most art by artists who died less than 70 years ago. If you ask for one, we will tell you and suggest something close.

How long does a hand-painted reproduction take?

About 3 to 4 weeks to paint, then 4 to 10 working days to deliver to most countries.

Remote destinations can take up to 20 working days. You get a photo of the finished painting to approve before it ships.

How much does a hand-painted oil painting reproduction cost?

Catalogue paintings start at $249 for the smallest size, rolled.

The price goes up with size and finish, and framing never costs more than the painting. Commissions start at $249 too, and you see the price before you pay anything.

Do you run sales or have discount codes?

No. Each painting has one price, and it is the price everyone pays.

We would rather not raise a price just to mark it down.

Will it look exactly like the original?

Very close, but not identical, and that is what makes it a real painting.

The artist works from a high-resolution image of the original and matches the composition, colours and brushwork by eye. You see a photo before it ships, and if something is not right, it gets corrected.

How a painting is made

What size painting should go above a sofa?

About two thirds of the sofa's width.

For a 210 cm sofa, look for a painting around 140 cm wide, or two paintings side by side. Hang it so the bottom sits 20 to 25 cm above the sofa and the centre is about 145 cm (57 in) from the floor.

What size painting should go above a bed?

Also about two thirds of the bed's width.

A 160 cm double bed suits a painting around 100 to 110 cm wide, and a 180 cm king bed one around 120 cm. Leave 20 to 30 cm between the headboard and the painting.

Rolled, stretched or framed: which should I choose?

Rolled costs least. Stretched and framed arrive ready to hang.

Rolled arrives in a tube, ideal if you frame it locally. Stretched is mounted on wooden bars and ready to hang. Framed comes in a choice of five mouldings. Stretched and framed go up to 60 × 90 cm (24 × 36 in); larger sizes ship rolled.

Is it real oil paint?

Yes. Oil paint on cotton canvas, painted by hand, never printed.

How do I look after an oil painting?

Keep it out of direct sun and away from damp and heat.

Dust it gently with a soft, dry brush. Never use water or cleaning products. Hang it away from radiators, fireplaces and bathroom steam.

Can I return it?

Yes, within 90 days for a full refund.

Will I pay customs or import tax?

You pay any import tax your country charges, directly to the courier. We do not add it at checkout.

The US has no import duty on hand-painted paintings, though the courier may charge a customs clearance fee. The EU charges import VAT, at a reduced rate for art in most countries. The UK charges 5% import VAT and no duty, Canada 5% GST plus provincial tax where it applies, and Australia 10% GST. Elsewhere it is set by local customs.

Can you paint from my photo?

Yes. Upload it on the commission page and see your price in about 10 seconds. Nothing to pay until you agree.

Do you sell gift cards?

Yes. $260, $500, $750, $1,200 or $1,500, sent by email.

$260 covers a small painting rolled in a tube, or the smallest painting from a photo. $750 covers a medium painting, framed, and $1,200 a large painting, framed or rolled, in the size you want. The card never expires, and the balance can be used over more than one order.
