About Famous Garden Paintings
Claude Monet was a keen gardener as well as a painter. Early in his career he painted "Garden at Sainte-Adresse" (1867, Metropolitan Museum of Art), a terrace of flags and flowers above the sea. At Giverny he built a water garden with a Japanese style bridge, and "The Water Lily Pond" (1899, National Gallery, London) is one of many views of it.
John Singer Sargent painted "Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose" (1885 to 1886, Tate) over two summers in the Cotswolds, working only for a few minutes each evening when the light was right. Two girls light paper lanterns among tall lilies. Gustav Klimt painted cottage gardens packed with flowers, including "Farm Garden with Sunflowers" (around 1907, Belvedere, Vienna).
