About Famous Mountain Paintings
Caspar David Friedrich's "Wanderer above the Sea of Fog" (around 1818, Hamburger Kunsthalle) shows a man seen from behind, standing on a rocky summit above drifting cloud. It became a symbol of Romantic painting. In America Albert Bierstadt painted the West on a grand scale, as in "The Rocky Mountains, Lander's Peak" (1863, Metropolitan Museum of Art).
Paul Cézanne painted Mont Sainte-Victoire near Aix-en-Provence dozens of times in oil and watercolour, breaking the mountain and the plain below into patches of colour. In Japan Katsushika Hokusai made Mount Fuji the subject of a whole series of prints, and "Fine Wind, Clear Morning", often called "Red Fuji", shows the peak glowing against a blue sky.
