About Famous Autumn Paintings
Pieter Bruegel the Elder included autumn in his 1565 series of the seasons. "The Return of the Herd" (Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna) shows cattle driven home under a heavy sky as the leaves turn. It is one of five surviving paintings from the series. In Victorian England John Everett Millais painted "Autumn Leaves" (1856, Manchester Art Gallery), with four girls gathering leaves into a smoking pile at dusk.
Claude Monet painted "Autumn Effect at Argenteuil" in 1873 (Courtauld Gallery, London), with trees glowing orange against the water of the Seine. The Russian painter Isaac Levitan made "Golden Autumn" (1895, Tretyakov Gallery) a portrait of birch trees in full yellow leaf beside a small blue river.
Autumn paintings bring warmth to dining rooms, libraries and living rooms with wood or earth tones.
