About Famous Lake Paintings
Paul Cézanne painted "Lake Annecy" (1896, Courtauld Gallery, London) on a rare holiday in the French Alps. The water, trees and château are built from blocks of blue and green. Gustav Klimt spent his summers on the Attersee in Austria and painted the lake in square formats, with the water filling almost the whole canvas.
In Finland Akseli Gallen-Kallela painted "Lake Keitele" (1905, National Gallery, London), where streaks of rippled light run across dark water. The Swiss painter Ferdinand Hodler returned again and again to Lake Thun and Lake Geneva, and "Lake Thun, Symmetric Reflection" mirrors the mountains in the water almost perfectly. Hodler liked to arrange nature in calm, balanced bands of colour, an idea he called parallelism.
Lake scenes bring a sense of calm to bedrooms, studies and quiet living rooms.
