About Famous Rose Paintings
Henri Fantin-Latour made his name with flower still lifes, and roses were his favourite subject. "A Basket of Roses" (1890, National Gallery, London) shows soft pink and white blooms against a plain background, painted with great patience. His work was especially admired by collectors in Britain.
Late in his life Édouard Manet painted small flower pieces, including "Moss Roses in a Vase" (1882) at the Clark Art Institute. Vincent van Gogh painted "Roses" in 1890 just before leaving Saint-Rémy, a large bunch of blooms in a green vase. Lawrence Alma-Tadema took the flower to excess in "The Roses of Heliogabalus" (1888), where a Roman emperor's guests are buried in a cascade of rose petals.
