About Famous Paintings of Paris
The rebuilding of Paris under Baron Haussmann gave painters new wide streets to paint. Gustave Caillebotte's "Paris Street; Rainy Day" (1877, Art Institute of Chicago) shows well dressed couples under umbrellas on wet cobbles. Camille Pissarro painted the Boulevard Montmartre from a hotel window in 1897, in every weather and at night.
Pierre-Auguste Renoir painted "Bal du moulin de la Galette" (1876, Musée d'Orsay), a Sunday dance in Montmartre with sunlight falling through the trees. Georges Seurat spent two years on "A Sunday on La Grande Jatte" (1884 to 1886, Art Institute of Chicago), a park on an island in the Seine painted in tiny dots of colour. Both pictures show Parisians at leisure on a Sunday.
