About Famous Farm and Rural Life Paintings
Pieter Bruegel the Elder painted "The Harvesters" in 1565 (Metropolitan Museum of Art), with farm workers eating lunch under a pear tree while others cut the golden wheat. John Constable's "The Hay Wain" (1821, National Gallery, London) shows a farm cart in the river Stour on a summer day in Suffolk.
In France Jean-François Millet gave dignity to peasant life. "The Gleaners" (1857, Musée d'Orsay) shows three women gathering the last grains of wheat after harvest, and "The Angelus" (1857 to 1859, Musée d'Orsay) shows a couple bowing their heads in prayer in a field at dusk. Vincent van Gogh admired Millet deeply and painted "The Harvest" (1888, Van Gogh Museum), a sunny patchwork of fields near Arles.
