About Famous Night Sky and Moon Paintings
Vincent van Gogh painted "The Starry Night" in June 1889 from memory, based on the view from his window at the asylum in Saint-Rémy. Swirling stars and a crescent moon rise above a sleeping village and a dark cypress. It hangs in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Caspar David Friedrich painted "Two Men Contemplating the Moon" (around 1819 to 1820, Dresden), two figures by a fallen tree looking at a thin moon. In Leeds Atkinson Grimshaw became known for moonlit streets and docks, such as "Liverpool Quay by Moonlight" (1887, Tate). James McNeill Whistler's "Nocturne in Black and Gold: The Falling Rocket" (Detroit Institute of Arts) shows fireworks over London and led to a famous libel case with the critic John Ruskin.
Hang them under a warm picture light, and choose 70 to 90 cm for "The Starry Night" so the brushwork stays visible from across the room.
