The painting
The Night Watch
It is not a night scene at all; dark varnish gave it the name, and that varnish only came off in the 1940s. Captain Frans Banninck Cocq, in black with a red sash, leads his militia company out beside his lieutenant in yellow. Among the men walks a small girl with a dead chicken at her belt, the company's emblem turned into a person. When it moved to Amsterdam's town hall in 1715 the canvas was cut down on all four sides, and two figures on the left were lost. The Night Watch is a hand-painted oil on canvas reproduction of Rembrandt's work. Each piece is made to order, with full customization of size and framing to suit your space. Every reproduction is backed by our 90-day satisfaction guarantee, with free worldwide shipping.

The hand behind it
Rembrandt
A miller’s son from Leiden who left university after a few months to train as a painter. By his mid-twenties he was in Amsterdam, running a busy studio and charging well for portraits of merchants who wanted to look substantial. The Night Watch was finished in 1642, the same year his wife Saskia died. The old story that the painting ruined him is not true: it was admired, and he was paid. What followed was messier than a single failure. He spent beyond his means, collected obsessively, and was declared insolvent in 1656. His house and collection were auctioned. He worked the rest of his life under an arrangement that kept his earnings out of creditors’ hands, and outlived both his partner Hendrickje and his son Titus. He painted himself roughly forty times across four decades. Put them in order and you get something no other painter of the period left behind: an unflattering record of a face ageing, and of a man who kept looking.

Questions
How is the finish priced?
The price you see is the painting at the size you chose, in the finish you chose, and it updates as you change either. Rolled arrives in a protective tube, ready for local framing. Stretched arrives on wooden bars, ready to hang. Framed arrives in its frame, ready to hang. Stretched and framed go up to 60 × 90 cm (24 × 36 in); larger paintings travel rolled.
How long does it take?
Painting begins after you order and takes 3 to 4 weeks, including drying and the photo you approve. Delivery then takes 4 to 10 working days to most countries. More on delivery times.
Will it look exactly like the original?
It is painted by a person, so no. Brushwork varies between copies, which is the difference between a painting and a poster.
What if I do not like it?
Ninety days from delivery, full refund.
Can I get The Night Watch in a different size or shape?
Yes. The Night Watch is painted to the size you want, in the original’s proportions, or adapted to another shape on request. Stretched and framed go up to 60 x 90 cm (24 x 36 in). The original measures 363 x 437 cm (142.9 x 172 in).
