About Famous Forest and Tree Paintings
Meindert Hobbema painted "The Avenue at Middelharnis" in 1689. A road runs straight towards the viewer between two rows of tall, thin trees, and the painting is now in the National Gallery in London. Two centuries later Claude Monet painted a series of poplars along the river Epte, catching the same trees at different times of day. The series of more than twenty canvases was painted in 1891.
Vincent van Gogh painted olive trees many times at Saint-Rémy in 1889, with twisting trunks and restless brushwork in greens and silvers. Gustav Klimt spent summers painting woods near the Attersee, and "Beech Grove I" (1902) fills a square canvas with thin trunks rising from a carpet of red and orange leaves. The light is dappled, as if seen through the canopy.
