About Famous River Paintings
John Constable painted "The Hay Wain" in 1821, a farm cart crossing the River Stour in Suffolk under a summer sky. It is one of the best loved paintings in the National Gallery in London. In France Georges Seurat painted "Bathers at Asnières" (1884) on the banks of the Seine, with workers resting in the sun and factory chimneys behind.
James McNeill Whistler turned the Thames at night into soft fields of blue in his "Nocturnes", including "Nocturne: Blue and Gold, Old Battersea Bridge" (Tate). Vincent van Gogh painted "Starry Night Over the Rhône" in Arles in 1888, a year before his more famous "The Starry Night", with gas lamps reflected in the dark river.
