About Famous Bridge Paintings
Utagawa Hiroshige's print "Sudden Shower over Shin-Ōhashi Bridge and Atake" (1857) shows figures hurrying across a wooden bridge in slanting rain. Vincent van Gogh copied it in oil in 1887. In Arles he painted "The Langlois Bridge at Arles" several times in 1888, a small drawbridge over a canal with washerwomen on the bank.
Claude Monet built a Japanese style footbridge over his water lily pond at Giverny and painted it many times, as in "Bridge over a Pond of Water Lilies" (1899, Metropolitan Museum of Art). Gustave Caillebotte painted "Le Pont de l'Europe" (1876), a new iron bridge over the railway tracks near the Gare Saint-Lazare. James McNeill Whistler turned Old Battersea Bridge in London into a dark silhouette in one of his "Nocturnes".
