About Famous Music Paintings
Caravaggio's "The Lute Player" (around 1596, Hermitage) shows a young musician with a lute, a violin and a vase of flowers, the notes of a real madrigal legible on the score. In Delft Johannes Vermeer painted "The Concert", with two women and a man making music in a quiet room. It was stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in 1990 and is still missing.
Édouard Manet's "The Fifer" (1866, Musée d'Orsay) presents a boy in military uniform against a plain grey background, inspired by Velázquez. Edgar Degas painted "The Orchestra at the Opera" (around 1870, Musée d'Orsay), with the musicians in the pit and dancers' legs cut off at the top. Pierre-Auguste Renoir painted "Young Girls at the Piano" in 1892, a warm domestic scene the French state bought for the nation.
