About Famous Kiss and Lovers Paintings
Gustav Klimt painted "The Kiss" in 1907 to 1908, the height of his golden period. A couple embraces at the edge of a flowery meadow, wrapped in patterned robes of gold leaf. It hangs in the Belvedere in Vienna. Almost fifty years earlier Francesco Hayez painted "The Kiss" (1859, Pinacoteca di Brera, Milan), a young couple in medieval dress in a stone stairway, which Italians read as a symbol of the country's unification.
Edvard Munch painted several versions of "The Kiss", with two figures by a window merging into a single dark form. Jean-Honoré Fragonard's "The Swing" (1767, Wallace Collection, London) is a playful Rococo scene of flirtation in a garden. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec painted "In Bed: The Kiss" in 1892, a tender and private moment.
Romantic paintings are popular for bedrooms and as anniversary or wedding gifts. "The Kiss" is square, so a size of 70 to 100 cm sits well centred above a bed.
