About Famous Greek Mythology Paintings
Renaissance painters revived the myths of ancient Greece, often using the Roman names of the gods. Sandro Botticelli's "The Birth of Venus" (around 1485, Uffizi) shows the goddess arriving on a scallop shell. Titian's "Bacchus and Ariadne" (1520 to 1523, National Gallery, London) shows the wine god leaping from his chariot on seeing the abandoned princess.
Peter Paul Rubens painted "The Judgement of Paris" several times, with the Trojan prince choosing between three goddesses. In Edwardian Britain John William Waterhouse painted "Echo and Narcissus" (1903, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool), the youth gazing at his reflection while the nymph watches. Herbert James Draper's "The Lament for Icarus" (1898, Tate) shows the fallen boy with huge dark wings, mourned by sea nymphs.
