The painting
The Birth of Venus
Blown ashore by the wind god Zephyrus and a gentler breeze, the goddess stands on a giant scallop shell while a woman in a flowered dress waits on land with a cloak to cover her. Her pose could not be held in life, with too much weight over one leg, and nobody in the picture casts a shadow. Gold paint picks out the hair, the wings, the shell and the landscape. The greens of the wings and leaves have darkened with light over the centuries, shifting the balance of colour. The Birth of Venus is a hand-painted oil on canvas reproduction of Sandro Botticelli's work. Each piece is made to order, with full customization of size and framing to suit your space. Every reproduction is backed by our 90-day satisfaction guarantee, with free worldwide shipping.

The hand behind it
Sandro Botticelli
Botticelli painted the two most reproduced images of the Italian Renaissance and then, in later life, appears to have wanted them gone. The Birth of Venus and Primavera came out of the Medici circle in Florence, full of Neoplatonic reference that scholars are still unpicking. His line is what distinguishes him. Figures are drawn rather than modelled, contours carry the rhythm, and there is almost no interest in the atmospheric depth his contemporaries were chasing. Venus stands on a shell that could not hold her and nobody minds. Savonarola’s preaching hit him hard in the 1490s. The late religious paintings turn harsher and more agitated, and Vasari claims he burned some of his own work on the bonfire of the vanities. He died in obscurity in 1510 and was largely forgotten until the Pre-Raphaelites and Ruskin rediscovered him three and a half centuries later.

Questions
How is the finish priced?
The price you see is the painting at the size you chose, in the finish you chose, and it updates as you change either. Rolled arrives in a protective tube, ready for local framing. Stretched arrives on wooden bars, ready to hang. Framed arrives in its frame, ready to hang. Stretched and framed go up to 60 × 90 cm (24 × 36 in); larger paintings travel rolled.
How long does it take?
Painting begins after you order and takes 3 to 4 weeks, including drying and the photo you approve. Delivery then takes 4 to 10 working days to most countries. More on delivery times.
Will it look exactly like the original?
It is painted by a person, so no. Brushwork varies between copies, which is the difference between a painting and a poster.
What if I do not like it?
Ninety days from delivery, full refund.
Can I get The Birth of Venus in a different size or shape?
Yes. The Birth of Venus is painted to the size you want, in the original’s proportions, or adapted to another shape on request. Stretched and framed go up to 60 x 90 cm (24 x 36 in). The original measures 172.5 x 278.5 cm (67.9 x 109.6 in).
