About Famous Angel Paintings
The Annunciation, when the angel Gabriel tells Mary she will bear a son, was one of the most painted scenes of the Renaissance. Fra Angelico painted it in fresco at the convent of San Marco in Florence around 1440. The young Leonardo da Vinci painted his "Annunciation" (Uffizi) in the 1470s, with a kneeling angel whose wings were modelled on a bird's.
Raphael's "Sistine Madonna" (1512, Dresden) ends with two small winged cherubs leaning on a ledge, now among the most reproduced details in art. William-Adolphe Bouguereau painted "Song of the Angels" (1881), three angels playing music to the sleeping Virgin and Child. The American painter Abbott Handerson Thayer painted "Angel" (1887, Smithsonian American Art Museum), his daughter standing with large white wings.
