Jean-Honoré Fragonard

Jean-Honoré Fragonard painted the lighter side of eighteenth century France: lovers in gardens, swings, stolen kisses and girls reading, all done with quick, feathery brushwork and warm, glowing colour. He was one of the most fluent painters of his age, and produced more than 550 paintings.

He was born in Grasse in 1732, studied with Chardin and Boucher, won the Prix de Rome in 1752 and spent several years in Italy. His best known picture, The Swing, is in the Wallace Collection in London. A Young Girl Reading, one of his loose, rapidly painted fantasy figures, is in the National Gallery of Art in Washington. He died in Paris in 1806.

In A Young Girl Reading, look for the scratches made with the end of the brush in her ruff.
