About Famous Bird Paintings
The Dutch Golden Age produced some of the finest bird paintings ever made. Carel Fabritius painted "The Goldfinch" in 1654, the year he died in the Delft gunpowder explosion. The small panel, now in the Mauritshuis in The Hague, shows a chained bird on its perch with remarkable economy.
Jan Asselijn's "The Threatened Swan" at the Rijksmuseum shows a swan spreading its wings to defend its nest, and was later read as a political symbol. Melchior d'Hondecoeter specialised in poultry yards and exotic birds, and his "The Floating Feather" in the same museum is a fine example. Two centuries later Vincent van Gogh painted "Wheatfield with Crows" in July 1890, a restless field under a dark blue sky.
