About Famous Portraits of Women
Leonardo da Vinci's "Mona Lisa" (begun around 1503, Louvre) is probably the most famous painting in the world, admired for its soft modelling and calm, uncertain smile. Johannes Vermeer's "Girl with a Pearl Earring" (around 1665, Mauritshuis, The Hague) is not a formal portrait but a study of a girl in a turban, turning to look over her shoulder.
John Singer Sargent caused a scandal at the Paris Salon of 1884 with "Madame X", a portrait of Virginie Gautreau in a black dress, now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Gustav Klimt's "Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I" (1907, Neue Galerie, New York) surrounds its sitter with gold leaf and patterns. It was returned to her family's heirs in 2006 after a long legal battle.
