About Paintings for the Hallway
A hallway is seen in passing, so a painting there needs a clear shape and strong colour. Vertical portraits work well, such as John Singer Sargent's "Madame X" (1884) or Claude Monet's "Woman with a Parasol" (1875). Old Master flower pieces by Jan Brueghel the Elder or Rachel Ruysch fill tall, narrow walls.
Dutch painters such as Pieter de Hooch painted views from room to room, a nice echo of a passage. Keep the painting's centre at about 145 to 150 cm from the floor. In a long corridor, hang a row of smaller paintings at even spacing. Light colours help in a dark hallway.
