About Paintings for the Dining Room
Food and company have been painted for as long as tables have been laid. Dutch masters such as Willem Claesz Heda and Pieter Claesz painted silver, wine and bread on dark tables. Pierre-Auguste Renoir painted friends lingering after lunch in "Luncheon of the Boating Party" (1880 to 1881), and in 1888 P. S. Krøyer painted the Skagen artists raising their glasses at a long lunch table in a garden.
Paul Cézanne's apples and jugs suit a more modern table. Hang the painting centred on the table or sideboard, with its bottom edge about 25 cm above it. Warm light at dinner suits paintings with deep reds and golds, and a picture light helps in the evening.
