About Paintings for the Kitchen
Kitchen still lifes and scenes have a long history. Johannes Vermeer painted a maid pouring milk in "The Milkmaid" (about 1658), now in the Rijksmuseum. Jean-Siméon Chardin painted simple kitchen tables with copper pans and eggs, and his early "The Ray" (1728) is in the Louvre. Juan Sánchez Cotán hung quince and cabbage in a stone window frame.
Paul Cézanne's apples bring a lighter, modern note. Hang kitchen paintings away from the hob and direct steam. A small or medium size suits the space between cabinets or above a table. An oil painting is sturdier than a print behind glass, and a medium size suits most kitchens. Pair two small still lifes for a longer wall.
