Joseph Denovan Adam

Joseph Denovan Adam painted animals, especially Highland cattle, in Scottish landscapes. His cattle are shaggy and solid, standing in misty glens or farmyards, painted with a firm touch.
He was born in Glasgow and studied in London. In 1887 he took a farm at Craigmill near Stirling, where he set up a school of animal painting, with cattle to serve as models. He was elected to the Royal Scottish Academy in 1892.
Calves in the Cabbage Patch and December near Callander show his work. Look at the texture of the cattle’s coats.
