Frequently asked questions

What people ask before ordering a painting they have not seen in person. If something is not answered here, write to us and a person will reply.

Are these really hand-painted, or prints?

Hand-painted, every one. An artist works on canvas in oil, starting from blank. Nothing is printed, and nothing is pre-made and waiting in a warehouse. If you look closely at a finished painting you can see brushstrokes sitting on the surface, which is the clearest difference from any print.

Are they copies of the originals?

They are reproductions, painted by hand after the original. A reproduction is not a forgery: it carries no false signature and is not presented as the original work. The paintings we reproduce are old enough that their copyright has expired, which is what makes it legal.

Who paints them?

A studio of trained painters who work in oil full time. Different painters have different strengths, so a portrait and a landscape will not necessarily go to the same person.

How long does it take?

Painting starts once you order and takes 3 to 4 weeks, including drying and the photo you approve. Delivery is on top of that:

  • United States and Canada: 4 to 8 working days
  • United Kingdom and Europe: 5 to 10 working days
  • Middle East, Japan, Korea and Southeast Asia: 3 to 9 working days
  • Australia and New Zealand: 7 to 12 working days
  • Latin America and the Caribbean: 8 to 16 working days
  • Africa and other destinations: 10 to 20 working days

Around some public holidays, painting can take one to two weeks longer.

Can I see it before it ships?

Yes. We photograph the finished painting and send it to you before it leaves the studio. If something is not right, we work on it until it is. Please reply within 2 days so it stays on schedule. If we have not heard from you, we send a reminder after 2 days, and on day 3 we call or message you on every contact you gave us. On day 5 we send a last notice, and on day 7 it ships as shown. If you ask for changes, the clock starts again with the new photo.

What sizes can I have?

We paint to the size you want, in the original’s true proportions. Each painting’s page shows ready-priced sizes. Want a different shape or an exact size? Email contact@oneartsource.com and we’ll adapt it to fit. Stretched and framed go up to 60 × 90 cm (24 × 36 in); bigger sizes ship rolled in a tube.

Does it come framed?

You choose one of three finishes. Rolled arrives in a protective tube, ready for a local framer. Stretched arrives on wooden bars, ready to hang as it is. Framed arrives in one of five mouldings, ready to hang. Stretched and framed go up to 60 × 90 cm (24 × 36 in). Larger paintings travel rolled, because a box that size is not safe to ship.

How many paintings can I choose from?

Any public domain painting. That includes Van Gogh, Monet, Klimt, Vermeer, Hokusai and every other artist whose work is out of copyright. Search it by title or artist to see its sizes and prices. If you only have a picture of it, send it on the commission page and your price shows in about 10 seconds.

Can you paint from my own photograph?

Yes. A person, a family, a pet, a house, a place you remember. Resolution and lighting matter more than anything else, so send the largest and sharpest file you have.

What can you not paint?

Anything still under copyright, which in practice means most twentieth-century art and any photograph taken by someone else. Your own photographs are yours, so those are never a problem. If you ask for something we cannot do, we will tell you and suggest an alternative.

How much does it cost?

Catalogue paintings start at $249 for the smallest size, rolled. The price goes up with size and finish, and framing never costs more than the painting. Commissions start at $249 too, and you see the price before you pay anything.

What does shipping cost?

Nothing. Delivery is free worldwide and tracked to your door.

Import charges are set by your country, not by us, and where they apply they are paid to the courier on delivery:

  • United States: no import duty on hand-painted paintings. The courier may charge a customs clearance fee.
  • European Union: import VAT, at a reduced rate for art in most countries.
  • United Kingdom: 5% import VAT, no duty.
  • Canada: 5% GST, plus provincial tax where it applies.
  • Australia: 10% GST.
  • Other countries: set by local customs.
What if it arrives damaged?

Open the parcel on the day it arrives. If anything is damaged, contact us within 48 hours with photos of the outer box, the whole painting, close-ups of the damage and the shipping label. We send a new painting or a full refund, your choice. You keep the damaged one, there is nothing to send back.

What if my parcel does not arrive?

Every parcel is tracked. If it is more than 14 days late and the courier cannot find it, we paint and send you a new one at no cost, or refund you in full, your choice.

Can I return it if I do not like it?

You have 90 days from delivery to send it back for a full refund. Keep the original packaging until you are sure, because a stretched canvas is hard to ship safely without it. If you simply changed your mind, the return postage is yours.

Can I cancel my order?

Yes, free of charge within 24 hours of ordering. After that your painting is already being made for you, so the order can no longer be cancelled. You still have 90 days to return it once it arrives.

How do I look after an oil painting?

Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from damp or radiators. Dust it with a dry soft brush rather than a cloth, and never use water or cleaning products on the surface. Oil paint continues to harden for months after it is finished, so avoid touching the surface early on.
