Adoration of the Magi
Kneeling Magi form a triangle with Mary and the Child at the front, and a half circle of figures gathers behind them. On the far right, one young man may be Leonardo himself. Further back, workmen seem to be repairing a ruined pagan building on the left, while horsemen fight on the right. The monks of San Donato in Scopeto commissioned it in 1481, but he left for Milan the next year with little more than the underdrawing in place.Leonardo began this altarpiece for the monks of San Donato a Scopeto in 1481 and left it unfinished the next year, when he moved to Milan. What survives is the underpainting: the Virgin and Child at the centre, the kings and a crowd of onlookers pressing around them, all laid in with brown and ochre washes. Behind them, a ruined building with open staircases and a fight between horsemen fill the background. The panel is in the Uffizi in Florence and measures about 2.4 metres square. We paint it by hand in oil after you order. You see a photo of the finished canvas and say yes before it is sent.

The hand behind it
Leonardo da Vinci
Leonardo finished very little. That is the first thing to understand about him. A few dozen paintings survive, several unfinished, against thousands of pages of notebooks filled with anatomy, water, flight, gearing and the occasional shopping list. What he did finish changed how paint could describe a face. Sfumato, the smoky transition between tones with no visible edge, is why the Mona Lisa’s expression refuses to settle. He built it up in translucent layers so thin that analysis still struggles to count them. The Last Supper was an experiment that failed technically, painted in tempera on dry plaster rather than true fresco, and it began deteriorating within his lifetime. He worked for the Sforza in Milan, for Cesare Borgia as a military engineer, and ended his life in France under François I. The anatomical drawings, made from dissections he performed himself, were centuries ahead of anything published.

Questions
How is the finish priced?
The price you see is the painting at the size you chose, in the finish you chose, and it updates as you change either. Rolled arrives in a protective tube, ready for local framing. Stretched arrives on wooden bars, ready to hang. Framed arrives in its frame, ready to hang. Stretched and framed go up to 60 × 90 cm (24 × 36 in); larger paintings travel rolled.
How long does it take?
Painting begins after you order and takes 3 to 4 weeks, including drying and the photo you approve. Delivery then takes 4 to 10 working days to most countries. More on delivery times.
Will it look exactly like the original?
It is painted by a person, so no. Brushwork varies between copies, which is the difference between a painting and a poster.
What if I do not like it?
Ninety days from delivery, full refund.
Can I get Adoration of the Magi in a different size or shape?
