Jean Béraud

Jean Béraud painted everyday Paris in the Belle Époque: cafés, boulevards, theatres and fashionable people. His pictures are detailed and lively, a record of the city at the end of the nineteenth century.
Born in Saint Petersburg to French parents, he studied under Léon Bonnat in Paris. He showed at the Salon from 1872 and became known for scenes of street life. He also painted religious scenes set in modern Paris.
His works are in the Musée Carnavalet and the Clark Art Institute. Look at the crowds on the boulevards and the rainy streets.
