Antonio María Esquivel

Antonio María Esquivel

Antonio María Esquivel was one of the leading Spanish Romantic painters, known for portraits and for his careful study of anatomy. His best known picture, Contemporary Poets (1846), shows a gathering of Spanish writers in his studio and is in the Prado.

He was born in Seville in 1806 and studied at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. He became court painter in 1843 and professor at the Academy in 1847, and wrote a treatise on anatomy for painters. He died in Madrid in 1857.

His Self Portrait shows the clear drawing and calm realism of his portraits.
