Cornelis Springer

Cornelis Springer was the leading Dutch painter of townscapes in the nineteenth century. His views of quiet streets, canals, churches and market squares are painted with precise detail and warm, even light, looking back to the Golden Age town views of Jan van der Heyden.
Born in Amsterdam, he trained with his father and several Amsterdam painters. He travelled through the Netherlands and Germany sketching buildings, then worked the drawings up into finished paintings in the studio, often adding figures. He won medals at home and abroad and advised on the design of the Rijksmuseum. Teylers Museum in Haarlem holds several of his works.
A View of the South Entrance of the St. Pancras Church, Enkhuizen shows his careful brickwork and calm streets.
