De Scott Evans

De Scott Evans painted elegant women in fashionable interiors and, it is now thought, clever trompe l’oeil still lifes of fruit hanging on strings or behind broken glass.
He was born in Boston, Indiana, in 1847, taught art in Ohio and studied in Paris with William Bouguereau in 1877 and 1878. He taught at the Cleveland Academy of Art and moved to New York in 1887. He died at sea in 1898. Arranging Pink Roses (1891) is one of his known genre scenes.
Free Sample, Take One and Hanging Apples are among the witty still lifes attributed to him, painted to fool the eye.
