Franz Roubaud

Franz Roubaud painted huge panoramas of battle, the circular paintings viewed from inside a rotunda that surround the viewer with a scene. He is also known for smaller, lively paintings of Caucasian horsemen and battles.

Born in Odessa to a French family, he studied at the Odessa Drawing School and then at the Munich Academy. He spent much of his career in Munich and taught at the St Petersburg Academy of Arts from 1904 to 1912. His great panoramas include the Siege of Sevastopol (1905) and the Battle of Borodino (1911), now in a purpose-built museum in Moscow.

Capture of Imam Shamil by Russian Troops in 1859 shows his energetic figures and wide mountain settings.
