Heinrich Bürkel

Heinrich Bürkel painted everyday life with humour. Italian peasants, Bavarian mountain villages, travellers, cattle at a fountain, winter scenes: his pictures are small, full of lively figures and anecdotes, with clear light.
He was born in Pirmasens and largely taught himself, studying the Dutch painters in Munich galleries. He then spent several years in Rome and painted the Campagna and its people. Back in Munich he became a popular artist, known for his imagination and humour. The Neue Pinakothek in Munich holds his work.
Cattle Watering at a Fountain on the Via Appia Antica and After the Hunt show his subjects. Look for the small stories in each scene.
