Henri Jacques Evenepoel

Henri Jacques Evenepoel

Henri Evenepoel painted people he knew, family, friends and Paris street life, in a style that started with the sober greys of Manet and Whistler and ended with bright, bold colour that anticipated Fauvism.

He was born in Nice in 1872 to Belgian parents, studied at the Brussels Academy and then in Paris, where in 1893 he joined Gustave Moreau’s studio alongside Henri Matisse and Georges Rouault. A stay in Algeria in 1897 and 1898 brightened his palette, producing works such as Orange Market, Blida. He died in Paris in 1899, aged 27. His work is in the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium and the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent.

At the Moulin Rouge shows his eye for Parisian nightlife.
