Henry Ossawa Tanner

Henry Ossawa Tanner is known for glowing religious paintings and moving scenes of African American life. His biblical scenes use soft light, deep blues and quiet emotion to make ancient stories feel real and human.
Born in Pittsburgh, he studied with Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. In 1891 he moved to Paris, studying at the Académie Julian, and he spent the rest of his life in France. His painting The Banjo Lesson (1893) is at Hampton University. His Resurrection of Lazarus was bought by the French state in 1897, and he became the first African American painter to win international fame. He travelled in Palestine and Egypt to study the settings of his biblical scenes.
Flight into Egypt and Christ and His Disciples on the Bethany Road show his luminous night light and sense of mystery.
