Jean-Achille Benouville

Jean-Achille Benouville painted classical landscapes of Italy with clear light and careful structure. Rome, the Campagna and hill towns appear under calm skies, with ruins, trees and small figures.

He was born in Paris and studied with François-Édouard Picot and Léon Cogniet. In 1845 he won the Prix de Rome for historical landscape. He spent many years in Italy, shared a studio in Rome with Camille Corot, and painted outdoors there. He was made a knight of the Legion of Honour in 1863. His younger brother François-Léon Benouville was also a painter.

The Colosseum Viewed from the Palatine and Capri show his Italian work. Look at the soft golden light on stone.
