Jerzy Siemiginowski-Eleuter

Jerzy Siemiginowski-Eleuter was court painter to King John III Sobieski of Poland. His work blends Italian Baroque classicism with the traditions of the Polish court, in religious pictures, portraits and large decorative ceilings.

Born in Lwów (now Lviv), he studied in Rome at the Accademia di San Luca, where Carlo Maratta was among his teachers. Returning to Poland, he became the chief painter at Wilanów Palace near Warsaw, where his allegorical ceiling paintings of the four seasons survive. He painted the king, Queen Maria Kazimiera and their children.

Portrait of Jan Sobieski and Portrait of Maria Kazimiera with her daughter Teresa Kunegunda show the royal family at the height of Sobieski’s reign.
