John Glover

John Glover was one of the first painters to show the Australian bush as it really looks, with the open, spreading gum trees, clear light and wide views of Tasmania, instead of forcing it into European conventions.

He was born in Leicestershire in 1767 and had a successful career in England as a landscape painter in the style of Claude Lorrain, earning the nickname “the English Claude”. In 1831, in his sixties, he emigrated to Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania) and farmed there while painting its landscape, its settlers and its Aboriginal people. He died there in 1849. His work is in the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the National Gallery of Australia and the Art Gallery of South Australia.

A Corroboree in Van Diemen’s Land is one of his best known Tasmanian scenes.
