John Mix Stanley

John Mix Stanley painted the American West and its Native American peoples. His portraits and scenes of tribal life, buffalo hunts and western landscapes are among the earliest detailed pictures of the region.
Born in Canandaigua, New York, he started as a sign and portrait painter. From 1842 he travelled widely in the West, painting and sketching, and he served as artist on a railroad survey in the 1850s. He built up an Indian Gallery of more than two hundred paintings, but most were destroyed in the Smithsonian fire of 1865. His surviving work is in the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the National Gallery of Art and the Denver Art Museum.
Blackfeet Card Players and Buffalo Hunt on the Southwestern Prairies show his lively observation.
