Louis-Jean-François Lagrenée

Louis-Jean-François Lagrenée painted mythological and allegorical scenes in a graceful Rococo style, with soft flesh, smooth finish and delicate colour. He was called the French Albani after the Italian painter he admired.

He was born in Paris and studied with Carle van Loo. He won the Prix de Rome in 1749. He spent two years in St Petersburg as court painter to Empress Elizabeth, and later directed the French Academy in Rome from 1781 to 1787. He was made a knight of the Legion of Honour by Napoleon.

Mars and Venus, Allegory of Peace shows his elegant style. Look at the smooth surfaces and soft light.
