Louis M Eilshemius

Louis Michel Eilshemius began with calm landscapes in the Barbizon manner and ended as a painter of strange, dreamlike scenes: moonlit woods and waterfalls with floating nymphs, painted with a rough, naive touch that later artists admired.

He was born in New Jersey in 1864, studied at Cornell and the Art Students League in New York, and then at the Académie Julian in Paris under Bouguereau. He travelled widely, including to North Africa and Samoa. His work was ignored for decades, then championed by Marcel Duchamp from 1917. He died in 1941. The Phillips Collection in Washington holds Samoa and Kingsbridge.

New York Roof Tops and Adirondacks show his personal, slightly eccentric vision.
