Louis-Remy Mignot

Louis Rémy Mignot painted glowing landscapes, from snowy American winters to steaming tropical forests and hazy marshes at sunset. He had a special gift for atmosphere: mist, twilight and light breaking through damp air.
Born in Charleston, South Carolina, he trained in The Hague in the studio of Andreas Schelfhout and then travelled in Europe. Back in New York he joined the Hudson River School painters, and in 1857 he went to Ecuador with Frederic Edwin Church, a trip that gave him tropical subjects for years. With the Civil War he moved to England in 1862, exhibited at the Royal Academy, and died in Brighton in 1870. His work is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum and the High Museum of Art in Atlanta.
In Golden Reflections and Church at Dusk, look at how he lets the whole picture be held together by one warm tone of light.
