Mikhail Vrubel

Mikhail Vrubel was a pioneer of Russian Symbolism. His paintings have a crystalline, mosaic-like surface built from small facets of colour, often blues and purples.

He was born in Omsk, studied law, then studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts under Pavel Chistyakov. In Kyiv he restored medieval frescoes. In Moscow, with the patron Savva Mamontov, he worked on ceramics at Abramtsevo. His Demon Seated (1890), inspired by Lermontov’s poem, is in the Tretyakov Gallery. The Swan Princess is another famous work.

The Demon Seated is the painting we offer. Look at the faceted brushwork and the brooding figure.
